Use These Tips For A Successful Garden
Horticulture is a fun and interesting hobby that has the potential to improve the life of you, your family, or your business. If you ascertain beforehand exactly what you need, you will not be throwing away money on unnecessary items, or plants that are not suited to your environment.
When laying sod, it is important that you do it correctly. Get your soil ready before you lay the sod. Break the soil into fine tilth and make sure you remove any weeds as well. The next step is compacting your soil and carefully leveling it. Make sure the soil is moist all the way through. Sod should be staggered in rows, the joints offsetting from each other. Press the sod down firmly so that the surface is flat and even. If there are gaps remaining, fill them with a bit of soil. Water the sod every day for a couple of weeks. Then it should be rooted well and ready for foot traffic.
Many times when digging in clay soil the clay will adhere to the shovel, which will make it much harder to dig. Coat the shovel with floor or car wax, and buff it with a clean rag to make the job a lot easier. The clay easily slides off the surface while keeping the end from getting rusty.
Your tool handles can easily be used as handy rulers. Tools that can be used for more than one task are quite handy to own. Measure the handles with a tape measure laid out in the floor. Mark your distances with a permanent marker. Now, every time you work in your garden, you are going to have a powerful ruler at the touch of your fingertips.
As the weather turns colder, it is important to prepare your sensitive shrubs for the change. Tender shrubs are very sensitive to cold weather, especially those that are planted in pots. With a sheet or blanket, you want to loosely cover the wigwam after you tie the tops of the canes together. This will work better than wrapping your plant with plastic, because air can still circulate, which will help to prevent rotting.
A set of knee pads are a life saver if you’re an avid gardener and a lot of your plants sit close to the ground. You will end up spending a good deal of time on your knees and this can cause a lot of pain by the end of the day. Your knees can get supported with a decent pair of horticulture knee pads.
If you are going to grow peas, start them inside rather then planting them outdoors. Seeds are more likely to sprout when started indoors. The seedlings tend to be healthier, which would help them resist diseases and pests more easily. Once they grow a bit bigger, the seedlings can be easily transplanted to an outdoor garden.
Pick a plant that will be a focal point. In any great garden design, a good focal point captures the eye. Usually this is a big plant that is somewhat different from the other plants in the garden.
The prevent your dog from trampling through your garden, spray some old aftershave, perfume or other heavily scented things on the grass around your plants. This can make scents that dogs are attracted to, and make your garden less interesting in general for pets.
Top all your garden beds with several inches of organic mulch. This is a simple method of discouraging weeds, retaining moisture, and adding excellent nutrients into the garden. Mulch will also improve the general appearance of your flower beds.
Be efficient when working in your garden. Wasting time finding tools is inefficient horticulture. Set up the tools you will need for your day prior to hitting the garden, then put them away neatly at the end of your horticulture session. You can use a tool belt for this purpose, or choose pants that contain several large pockets.
It just requires some effort and a bit of learning on your part, and of course, a whole lot of patience. However, while you watch something grow that you planted, the satisfaction will make it worthwhile.
