If you work with clay soil, you have probably found using a shovel very frustrating and exhausting. Make your shoveling job easier by lightly coating a shovel with a layer of wax, then buffing the surface. Either car wax or floor wax will work just fine. The shovel will glide through the clay and as a bonus, your shovel will be resistant to rust.

If your plants have a powdery mildew, don’t use expensive chemicals on them. Mix plain baking soda with a small bit of liquid soap and water. You just need to spray your plants with this solution once every five days until the mildew is no longer visible. This method is not going to cause any damages to your plants and the mildew will go away slowly.

If beautiful flowers throughout the warmer months are important to you, make sure you put bulbs into the ground. Bulbs are one of the easiest plants to grow and are hardy perennials that return each year. Different varieties of bulbs flower at varied times and if you make the right choices you can have blossoms from early spring through late summer.

If you want to effectively weed out young plants, you can try “boiling” away the weeds. Water is cheaper than chemical herbicides, and less hazardous to humans and soil. One simple layer across the weeds with a pot of boiling water will take care of the problem, but you have to remember the same applies to your plants, as well. The water will kill the weeds by destroying the roots and if poured directly on the weeds, will prevent them from growing back.

A green garden needs to begin with seeds, not plants. Planting seeds is the most eco-friendly way to start a new garden. The planters used to hold nursery plants are generally not made from eco-friendly materials, and thus get thrown into landfills. Starting from seeds, or buying from one of the few nurseries that use biodegradable planters, prevents this.

You should think about planting evergreens that yield berries in your garden. These help to give your garden nice looking color, even during winter when most vegetation is colorless. Some examples of evergreens that produce berries and color in the wintertime are the American Holly, Cranberrybush, the Winterberry and the Common Snowberry.

To give them a boost, pour out any leftover water from steaming or boiling vegetables on the plants or soil around them. In order to help acidify the soil for plants like gardenias and rhododendrons, you can use coffee and tea grounds. Chamomile tea is a natural way to rid your plants of a persistent fungus.

Horticulture is a great relaxation activity. Everyone wants to find a way to relax and enjoy themselves. Horticulture is a relatively easy way to pursue this goal. It is not prohibitively expensive, and has numerous benefits. Of course the highest return is the peace you will feel from having some time alone in your garden and growing your own plants.
