These Tips Can Help Your Organic Garden Thrive!

,

If you want to improve your diet, you may want to get into organic horticulture. Growing an organic garden does take some planning, though. You probably have many questions about how to accomplish your gardening goals.

Plants all need a good supply of C02 to grow properly! Typically, the higher the levels of carbon dioxide present in a plant’s environment, the better it will grow. A greenhouse is the best way to create an environment rich in CO2. CO2 levels, when kept high, give your plants optimal growing conditions.

The approach of fall means you need to start planting autumn goodies. Try using a pumpkin as a natural plant pot. You can plant fall vegetables such as lettuce in an empty pumpkin shell. Once you’ve cut its top and scooped the insides out, spray the edges and inside with Wilt-Pruf to prevent rotting. Once you have finished, you can begin planting.

Coffee Grounds

If you find that you have soil that has high amounts of alkaline, mix used coffee grounds throughout the soil. The coffee grounds are an inexpensive way to give some acid back to the dirt. When you can eliminate excess alkaline from the soil, it makes what you are growing much healthier. This means your veggies will taste better, and your flowers will be more vibrant than ever.

Always have a plan for the garden prior to the start of planting it. It will be a while before things start to sprout and visually remind you of what was planted where, so a written record can be helpful. In addition, some plants are so small you might forget you planted them once all your plants sprout. Planning stops these plants from getting lost in the crowd.

Deciduous shrubs should be protected from the elements. If you have a few potted shrubs, they should be shielded from the wintry weather. Tie the tops tightly together, and cover the wigwam with a sheet or blanket draped loosely over it. Covering your foliage in plastic will let the air in – and may lead to decay.

Try to keep your plants aerated and dry, every day. Moisture on your plants is a sure way to attract parasites and disease. Fungi is very common. Fungicidal spray treatments can contain fungi, but spraying prior to problems even developing in the first place is the best way to go about it.

Use natural pest control when possible. Onions and marigolds can help to deter slugs. Another way to get rid of pests is to spread wood ash at ground level around shrubs and tree plantings. You can avoid using pesticides that contain harsh chemicals if you employ these techniques.

If you are a first time gardener, it is important that you follow all of the instructions on all of your tools and chemicals. Some of the chemicals in these products can cause skin irritation, or worse, if you fail to take this simple precaution. Keep yourself safe by carefully following all instructions.

You should think about planting evergreens that yield berries in your garden. The berries will provide a boost of color to your backyard, even during the colder months when most of the other vegetation has been drained of their color. Some examples of evergreens that produce berries and color in the wintertime are the American Holly, Cranberrybush, the Winterberry and the Common Snowberry.

To keep dogs from disturbing your garden, spray some old aftershave, cologne, perfume or other strongly-scented products in the dirt or grass surrounding it. This covers up the smells that bring dogs to gardens in the first place, which means dogs are less likely to enter the garden.

As you have read, a lot of hard work and homework go into producing a plentiful organic garden. In addition, it’s true that you must be consistent if you want to see results. Keep the tips offered in mind and you can see more success.
