Organic Gardening Tips For Budding Organic Gardeners
Starting and maintaining an organic garden requires a lot of patience, and an affinity for growing plants. It is a good way to grow healthy fresh foods in an environmentally friendly, chemical-free way. This all sounds easy, but the process can sometimes feel complicated. The following hints and tips can help you grow your own organic garden easily and successfully.
Choose plant strains that will give you the best harvest with the biggest yield. A hybrid designed for your weather, and resistant to local diseases, will give a better yield than non-hybrids.
When fall arrives, it’s time to plant your autumn vegetables. A hollowed out pumpkin can become a festive container for kale and lettuce. When you have finished cutting and cleaning the pumpkin, spray it with some liquid that will stave off wilting to keep it from rotting. Once you have completed this, start planting!
When you mow your lawn, do not mow it close to the ground. If you leave your grass kind of high, your roots will be deeper and your lawn will be stronger and not dry out. The shorter the grass is, the shorter the roots are, which leads to a dry lawn.
Plan your garden before you plant it. This will help you to remember where you planted the different plants when sprouts begin to shoot up from the ground. It can also keep you from planting any of your garden favorites too close to each other.
A set of knee pads is a great investment if your garden has a lot of low-growing plants. Horticulture is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable; you don’t want to finish every gardening session with aching, throbbing knees. A set of quality knee pads designed for gardening can be a world of relief for your central leg joints.
Separate irises. Try increasing your stock by dividing your overgrown clumps of plants. Lift the dead bulbous irises. The bulbs will naturally split in your hands, and after you replant them, will flower about a year later. Use a knife to divide the rhizomes. Throw out the center and cut pieces on the outside that are new. Every piece needs to have a minimum of one good offshoot. The quicker you can replant your cuttings, the better chances they will reappear next season.
Familiarize yourself with the optimum harvesting time of your vegetables. Individual vegetables have distinct windows of time to pick for getting the greatest flavors. Veggies such as zucchini or baby peas, for instance, taste their best if they get picked young. Tomatoes, however, are best picked from the vine later when they are very ripe. Research the best time to pick your produce.
Controlling pests in your vegetable garden can be extremely difficult to deal with. The vegetables are intended to be eaten, thus you should refrain from using harsh pesticides and chemicals. Persistence and care is a much better solution for pest control, but many avoid it because it actually requires some work on their behalf. If you catch pests right away, the easiest way to eradicate them is to pick them off plants by hand.
To attract the right kind of insects, plant heather. Bees are very attracted to heather. When heather is first formed during the spring, it’s an early nectar source. Spiders, ground beetles and other insects helpful to your garden tend to live in a heather bed, because heather beds are generally undisturbed. If you do have to tend to your heather, wear gloves in case you accidentally annoy one of the residents!
If you want to get children in on the fun, plant a few strawberries, everbearing if possible. Kids really enjoy plucking snacks directly from the ground, and may have greater enthusiasm for the work if they see the results of their labor right away.
Gardening organically is a rewarding hobby that incorporates nature, effort and patience. This hobby makes use of the land around us to grow something that tastes really good. Follow the tips and put in the needed effort, and you will be a successful organic gardener.
