Organic Gardening Advice That Everyone Should Know

Environmentally-conscious gardening requires dedication to following best practices at all times. Maintain your garden smartly by using efficient methods. This will make the fruits and vegetables in your garden healthier and taste better. Use the following tips to create a flourishing and very rewarding organic garden.

Use annuals and biennials to enliven your flower beds. These biennials and annuals are fast-growing, and they allow you to brighten up your flower bed with a change for each season. You can use them between the gaps in shrubs and perennials where there is plenty of sun. There are plenty of varieties including petunia, marigold, cosmos, sunflower, hollyhock, and rudbeckia.

If you have a wall or fence that you do not like, plant climbers to mask its appearance. They can be used to cover up unsightly fences or walls. Often, they can grow enough to cover up an eyesore in one season. They may grow up through some existing shrubs and trees, and can even be worked to grow around an arbor. Some types of climbers support themselves naturally through twining stems or tendrils, but others will have to be attached to something. Excellent varieties include honeysuckle, wisteria, jasmine, climbing roses and clematis.

Grow wheat or cat grass in the area around the plants that your cat is eating. In addition, you could put an item on the soil’s top around the plants which has a smell that cats hate, such as citrus peel or mothballs.

Tender deciduous shrubs are very fragile, so protect them. Delicate shrubs that are sitting in pots should be sheltered from the cold weather. Tie together the tops, and then use a sheet or blanket to cover the wigwam loosely. Doing this is a lot more effective than wrapping up the plant with plastic because it lets air circulate, which could avoid any rotting.

Do you ever wish that your fresh mint leaves would not grow as quickly and overcome your garden? Instead of planting mint in the ground, confine it to a large pot. Bury the container so that your plant does not stand out. The container will keep the roots from spreading too far.

Try growing your peas indoors for the first couple months. If you plant them inside, they might germinate more effectively. The seedling sprouts will be heartier, giving them a better chance to grow into a healthy adult plant capable of rebuffing diseases. Once they grow a bit bigger, the seedlings can be easily transplanted to an outdoor garden.

You should think about planting evergreens that yield berries in your garden. They offer terrific color during the dreariest times of the year when nothing else you have planted has any hue remaining. Other plants that boast of winter berries include: Holly, Snowberry and Winterberry.

When planting anything, think about planting for color so that you have something to enjoy in the fall. It doesn’t have to be this way, however. If you plan properly, you can make your fall garden the most colorful time of the year. There are many variations in leaf color with different varieties of Maple, Beech and Dogwood trees that can give you lively yellows and deep crimsons. Barberry, conaneaster and hydrangea are all wonderful choices in shrubs.

Plant heather to attract beneficial insects. Bees like it because it gives them nectar in the springtime. In addition, beds of heather are usually left alone. Because of this, insects that are good for your garden often make them a home, such as beetles or spiders. If you choose to employ the use of heather, always make sure to throw on a pair of gloves during the pruning process.

To create an English garden, combine a lot of different plants in the same garden. Plants that grow to be the same height end up uniform and flat looking.

Consider planting strawberries, especially ones that are everbearing, for your garden if you have small children. Children love to pick their own fruit right out of the garden, and will be more willing to help with the process if they get something out of it.

Ward off certain diseases that plague plants with the use of aspirin. To add the aspirin to the plant, dissolve about one tablet and a half into approximately two gallons of fresh water. All you need to do is spray the plants with the solution in order to battle common ailments. Try spraying your plants with this around every three weeks.

Keep your tools handy to work more efficiently. Use a bucket large enough to hold all your equipment or wear pants with multiple pockets. Have shears, a trowel, gloves and other commonly used garden tools portable and easy to access.

Do not underestimate pine as great mulch. Acidic soil is a favorite of garden plants that are high in acidity. If you have acid loving plants, use pine needles as a mulch. Cover up your beds with a few inches of needles. As they start to decompose, they’ll spread out acid onto the ground and soil.

Bring more value to your property. Landscaping provides some of the best home improvement returns. Certain plants could increase the value by 20%. Find plant materials for your landscape design that will thrive in your particular climate.

Organic horticulture can help you develop an appreciation for the taste and freshness of your food. It takes research, patience and dedication, but organic gardening is well worth every bit of effort it requires.
