There are many different reasons for adopting organic gardening methods. For example, some people prefer to use organic horticulture to cultivate edibles for the dinner table. You do have to put in some effort, though. Perhaps you are hesitating about where to begin.

You don’t need expensive chemicals to treat powdery mildew on plants. A great home remedy is to mix baking soda with water and a little bit of liquid soap. Once every week, you should spray the mixture on your plants; the mildew will disappear shortly thereafter. Baking soda won’t harm your plants, and takes care of the mildew efficiently and gently.

Climbing Plants

If you want to cover up your walls or fences, make sure that you specifically use climbing plants. Climbing plants can cover a wall after one growing season only. They may grow up through some existing shrubs and trees, and can even be worked to grow around an arbor. A number of climbers need to be attached to a support, but others just take care of their own attachments via tendrils and stems that twine. Some climbers that have proven to be reliable are honeysuckle, jasmine, wisteria, clematis, and climbing roses.

If you want the best results, you need to choose the right soil. Depending on what kind of plants you want in your garden, the soil might or might not be adapted. You could also isolate a certain area, and fill it with just one kind of soil.

Try growing some cat grass or wheat grass in the vicinity of the plants that your cat likes to eat. Another option is to place something smelly, like citrus peels or mothballs, on the soil surrounding the plants that have previously been eaten.

For weeds that aren’t in the middle of your plants, use boiling water to kill their roots. This is a safe way to eliminate weeds, as this will not damage the soil. Make sure to pour only on the weeds and to stay away from healthy vegetation. The roots of the weeds are damaged by the boiling water which, in turn, inhibits further growth.

Try to ensure your plants are dry and have enough air, daily! Excess moisture on a plant will invite unwanted parasites or diseases to the plant. Fungus is a common problem when plants are allowed to remain damp. Be sure to prevent the growth of fungus with a spray that will inhibit their growth.

A quality garden must be grown from seeds. Starting from seed is far less harsh on the environment than using plants you buy at the nursery. Seeds eliminate the waste of plastic containers from nurseries which rarely get recycled. There are some nurseries, however, that send their plants out in organic potting materials.

Make sure to wear sun protection gear if you’ll be working in the garden in the sun. Wear sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses. Using the right protection from the harmful rays of the sun means less of a chance of you getting sunburn and skin cancer.

Flower Beds

Coat your flower beds with a few inches of an organic mulch. This will help to inhibit weed growth, helps to lock in moisture, and adds needed nutrients to your organic garden. It will also increase the visual appeal of the flower beds.

Pine can make for a great type of mulch. Some garden plants have a higher acidity, and prefer a more acidic soil. Plants like these thrive when you use pine needles as mulch. Go ahead and cover the beds you have with needles a couple of inches and while they decompose, they actually disperse some acid into the soil.

Coffee grounds can benefit many types of soil. Coffee grounds are filled with nitrogen, that is a nutrient required by plants. Plants need an adequate nitrogen source in order to thrive. Adding coffee grounds, chemical fertilizer, or diluted urea to your soil increases the soil’s nitrogen content and will help to make your plants grow faster, taller and healthier.

Gardening can actually increase the value of your property! Out of any home improvement project, a beautifully landscaped garden will give you the best return. In fact, you can boost your home’s value by a fifth with the right landscaping, and in the right market. For landscaping your yard, pick out plant species that fit your climate and require little watering.

Laundry Basket

When it’s harvest time, you should utilize a basket that you put laundry in to carry your veggies. The laundry basket is a perfect strainer for any produce run off. The produce can be rinsed off as it sits in the laundry basket, and extra water will drain out through the sides.

If slugs are an issue in your garden, a beer trap can make them go away. Use a glass jar buried in the soil so the rim of the jar is at ground level. Keep the jar filled with beer, up to about an inch from the top. Slugs will be attracted by the beer and fall into the jar.

As stated from the above article, there is a good amount of effort, work and research involved when you begin growing an organic garden. You will get great results if you are consistent and patient. Hopefully this article has you well prepared for your endeavor into the relaxing and productive world of organic horticulture.
