Horticulture Does Not Have To Be Hard

,

If you use these principles of organic gardening, you will produce notably positive effects for your plants and your planet. Your caring skills will shine through in the quality of your garden. This is an admirable thing. As with anything, there is always room for improvement. Some advice that will be of use to you follows.

Do not plant perennials that are prone to snail infestation. A particularly vulnerable plant can be killed by snails and slugs overnight. These pests are especially attracted to tender sprouts and to delicate, soft leaves. There are some perennials that do not appeal to slugs, such as those with leaves that are hairy and tough with a bad taste. Wonderful varieties of such perennials include euphorbia, campanula, helleborus, achillea, and heuchera.

Carbon Dioxide

All plants need an adequate supply of carbon dioxide in order to thrive. Typically, the higher the levels of carbon dioxide present in a plant’s environment, the better it will grow. A greenhouse has the best levels available. Here the CO2 can be increased, as it cannot be outdoors, and can give your plants the best conditions for rapid growth.

Pull all the weeds in your garden. Weeds will cause your garden to become overgrown and cluttered. To help you do this, you may want to consider using white vinegar. White vinegar can not only kill the weeds, it’s also a non-toxic spray that won’t harm pets or people. If you’re annoyed with pulling up weeds manually, douse them with a white vinegar solution.

Pre-soak seeds overnight in a dark place. You then want to place a small amount of seeds in a container that’s smaller and then fill it up with water to the top. This will keep your seeds hydrated and give you a little head start with your growing. Seeds that are cultivated this way are more likely to survive and mature properly.

Knee Pads

If your garden requires a lot of low work, then save yourself some strain by investing in knee pads. Long hours tending your garden can leave your knees sore and achy. Buy yourself a pair of knee pads to use in the garden to cushion and protect your knees.

If you want to grow peas, consider starting them indoors instead of planting them outside. When you plant the seeds indoors, your seeds will start to germinate better. The baby plants will also be stronger and will resist pests and disease better. Transplant them outside when they are fully established and able to thrive.

To ensure a healthy garden, make sure you surround your plants with a few inches of good organic mulch. When you place mulch around your plants, it keeps the ground more moist. In addition, mulch will help you to prevent weeds. This will save you a ton of time and work.

If you are new to horticulture, make sure you read and follow all the directions on any tool or chemical you use. It may seem simple enough, but not following it could lead to chemical burns and skin irritations. Keep your body safe and follow directions.

Consider planting evergreens that produce berries in your yard. This will allow your garden to have color, even in the dreary winter months. Other winter plants include the American Holly, Winterberry, The American Cranberrybush and the Common Snowberry.

Heather can be planted to attract useful insects. Bees are naturally attracted to heather for its nectar. Because heather beds require very little maintenance, they often become the home of spiders, ground beetles, and other insects that can benefit your garden. If you do have to tend to your heather, wear gloves in case you accidentally annoy one of the residents!

Are you a parent? If you are, try planting some strawberries like everbearing strawberries in your garden. Children love to snap up these sweet juicy fruits for themselves and will be much more willing to eat other foods you’ve planted as well.

Try to put an aspirin in the water to get rid of plant diseases. To add the aspirin to the plant, dissolve about one tablet and a half into approximately two gallons of fresh water. The solution can then be used to spray the entire plant, and will offer protection naturally. Plants should be sprayed once every two to three weeks.

You now have the skills, the tools, and the equipment necessary to apply these strategies to your own organic garden. This is a positive thing. These tips should provide you with a good basis for your horticulture. Learning something new can always help with any hobby.
