Chances are, you’ve probably at least heard, if not seen, organic foods at some point. Organically produced foods typically stand out from the rest. The organic products cost more, and they often come in distinctive packaging. The quick and drastic change in the weather conditions can shock your plants and cause them to die. It’s important that you gradually change temperate conditions over time, so that your plants can adjust. Put them in the sun outside for a couple of hours during the first day. Over a period of several days, slowly increase the time they are allowed to stay outside. Finally, after about a week, you should be able to move them outside and leave them there for the summer.

As the weather turns colder, it is important to prepare your sensitive shrubs for the change. Any potted shrubs should be sheltered in the winter from cold weather. Irises can benefit from being separated. The more you divide clusters of irises, the more your irises will multiply. When foliage is dead, lift bulbous irises. If you split the bulbs that you pull up, and replant them, they will bloom the following year. Divide rhizomes with a knife. You can trim new pieces away from the outside of the bulbs and then simply throw the old center away. Each piece should retain a minimum of one sturdy offshoot capable of spurting new growth. Replant immediately.

With this knowledge at hand, it is in your best interest to wear gloves when tending the heather.
