Finding Time To Garden In Your Busy LIfe
Establishing an organic garden is a smart way to work towards a healthier diet. You do have to put in some effort, though. This may make you wonder how you can begin to grow your personal organic garden.
Find some plants that will give you a higher yield. A hybrid designed for your weather, and resistant to local diseases, will give a better yield than non-hybrids.
Your first and best line of defense against pests is having healthy soil. Healthy plants are stronger and more able to resist both pests and disease. If you start with balanced soil, your garden will produce healthy plants with the best yield. Refrain from using chemicals since these will increase the salt content of the soil.
Garden vegetables should be planted in areas of the ground that receive a minimum of six hours of daily sunlight. Most vegetables need that much sun to grow rapidly and successfully. This is also true for some flowers.
To help young plants, try pouring boiling water on top of nearby weeds. Considering that boiling water is rather safe, you don’t have to worry about toxins in your soil or at your dinner table. Soak weeds with freshly boiled water, just being mindful to not afflict damage on plants you want to keep. Boiling water can hurt the roots of weeds and can prevent them from growing.
Split up your irises. You can get more irises by dividing the overgrown clumps. If you notice a dead foliage, lift the bulb. The bulbs will split up naturally in your hand, and when replanted, will often flower the next year. Use a knife to divide the rhizomes. Cut the center out of each rhizome but save the pieces. Every piece is suppose to have at least one durable offshoot. Replant your new rhizome pieces as soon as you have finished the cuttings.
A good green garden should start from seeds and not plants. Not only is this more of an effective method for gardening, but it’s also more environmentally-friendly. Seeds eliminate the waste of plastic containers from nurseries which rarely get recycled. There are some nurseries, however, that send their plants out in organic potting materials.
Good tools for the gardener include a wheelbarrow and a kneeling stool. Spending lots of time close to the ground while working tends to be hard on your knees, that is why it is important to have a portable and lightweight garden stool that you can use for comfort. In addition, maintaining a garden typically means moving around heavy dirt and other objects, which makes buying a wheelbarrow a very smart purchase.
Pouring the excess water from your dinner of steamed veggies on them can help. To add acidity to the soil of your rhododendrons and gardenias, use coffee or tea grounds. Spray your plants with a 9:1 mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide to eliminate fungus without harming your plants.
