Create Your Own Garden Of Eden With These Tips

, ,

Meticulous attention to your garden is one of the primary tenets of the green horticulture movement. This can be achieved by using smart, eco-savvy gardening techniques. You have the ability to produce healthy, delicious produce on your own property. Use this advice to take your organic garden to the next level.

Use perennials resistant to slugs and snails. Slugs and snails can decimate a plant in one night. They often enjoy feeding on perennials with very smooth and tender leaves. Young plants are a special favorite of theirs. Perennials with hairy, tough leaves as well as those with unpleasant taste are not appetizing to snails and slugs. Some of the best varieties of these include achillea, campanula, euphorbia, and heuchera.

Cover fences and walls with climbing plants. Known commonly as climbers, these plants are very versatile, easy to grow, and they will quickly spread out to cover up walls and fences within a single season. They can cover an arbor, or grow through trees and shrubs. There are those that have to be fixed to a support, but others will find a surface to cling to all on their own through twining stems or tendrils. Some climbers that have proven to be reliable are honeysuckle, jasmine, wisteria, clematis, and climbing roses.

Keep your fragile shrubs protected from the winter weather. Delicate shrubs that are sitting in pots should be sheltered from the cold weather. The tops should be tied together, and the wigwam should be loosely covered with a sheet or blanket. Using fabric, rather than plastic, allows air circulation and prevents rotting from moisture build up.

Knee Pads

Get some gardening knee pads if you find yourself kneeling on the ground a lot to do your gardening. Horticulture is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable; you don’t want to finish every gardening session with aching, throbbing knees. Buy yourself a pair of knee pads to use in the garden to cushion and protect your knees.

Do you enjoy your mint leaves, but can’t stand how they dominate your garden? Rein in their growth by planting the mint in a large pot or garden container instead. If you would like the mint leaves to still be in the ground, simply plant the container, and the leaves will stay within the boundaries of the pot.

Be sure your garden is fertilized. Manure is very effective in helping plants grow, although it is important to use a commercially composted product to minimize the risk of pathogens. It is important that you use some sort of fertilizer, although it doesn’t really matter which variety you choose.

Don’t count the fall season out. It’s not necessary to think this way, however. In terms of colorful foliage, fall is the time of year admired by many. Maple trees can range from beautiful reds and yellows in addition to Beech or Dogwood trees. Also, when considering shrubs, try using cotoneaster, hydrangea, or barberry.

Take advantage of horticulture as a means to unwind. Many hobbies can help you to relax and attain inner peace. Gardening is a relatively easy way to pursue this goal. Without too much effort, you can enjoy great returns. The best return on your investment is the feeling of happiness and tranquility from growing your own greenery.

You can attract the insects you need by planting heather. Bees love heather, and it is a favorite stop when they emerge in early spring.
If your heather bed is undisturbed, as it would be in nature, many beneficial insects will make it their home. Because of this, don’t forget to protect your hands when pruning heather beds.

If you want to get children in on the fun, plant a few strawberries, everbearing if possible. For kids, there are few things as fun as picking fruit fresh from the garden. Your children will be much more interesting in helping out if they know they’ll get to enjoy some tasty strawberries.

If you want a sustainable garden, leave a part of it undisturbed for wildlife to enjoy. This will also benefit your cultivated gardens as it will attract more bugs and birds to pollinate your other plants.

Prior to working in the garden, make sure any cuts on your hands heal completely, or shield any cuts from contact with chemicals and dirt. A cut can become infected if dirt is allowed to enter the cut while gardening. Bandage all cuts completely, using bandages that cover and seal cuts.

It can be easy to prepare the soil in a perennial garden. Simply use a spade or small shovel to get under the grass or turf and flip it over. Then, using wood chips, cover the area to a depth of three or four inches. After a few weeks, you can then dig into the turf and plant the perennials of your choosing.

As these suggestions have shown you, anyone can have a successful organic garden. It may take a ton of work, but it is worth it.
